GlotQuest is a Japanese-learning app that turns vocabulary into a personal learning adventure. Choose a quest, build knowledge through focused study, and practice with several different games.
The app is in active development. Alpha testers help find crashes, confusing interactions, incorrect content, and the rough edges that only appear during real study.
This is early software. Features may be incomplete, progress formats may change,
and you may encounter bugs. Android and Windows builds are currently distributed directly from this site,
so your device may display an installation warning.

How GlotQuest works
GlotQuest separates choosing what to learn from choosing how to practice it. Your active quests supply the vocabulary; Learn, Study, and the games give you different ways to work with that material.
Study
Review quest vocabulary directly with generated image cards or animated cards. Use Study when you want to examine the material without the pressure of a game.
Quests
Choose which collections of vocabulary are active, select available skill options, and follow your mastery. You can also build a personal quest from Japanese subtitle content.
Dictionary
Look up Japanese words and writing-system details independently of your current quests, then explore meanings, readings, and related information.
What is a quest?
A quest is the subject matter you have chosen to learn. Activating a quest makes its vocabulary available to Learn and Study. This lets you focus practice on material that matters to you instead of working through one fixed, universal list.
GlotQuest includes built-in quests and can create personal quests from Japanese subtitles. Imported subtitles are matched against the dictionary so their vocabulary can become study material. You can activate more than one quest, change available skill options, and monitor mastery from the Quests screen.
Install the alpha
Choose your platform below. Download only from this page, and check that the displayed version matches the version and build shown in GlotQuest Settings when reporting a problem.
Windows 10/11
Install on Windows
- Download the Windows alpha package.
- Extract the entire ZIP into a new folder. Keep all extracted files together.
- Open the extracted folder and run GlotQuest.exe.
- If Windows displays a security warning, check that the download came from this page and its SHA-256 matches the value below before continuing.
- Launch GlotQuest and complete the first-run setup.
Android
Install on Android
- Download the GlotQuest APK on your Android device.
- Open the downloaded file.
- If prompted, allow your browser or file manager to install apps from this source.
- Review Android's installation warning, then choose Install.
- For safety, turn off “install unknown apps” for that source after installation.
Set up Japanese text-to-speech on Windows
GlotQuest uses voices installed by Windows. If Japanese pronunciation is silent or no Japanese voice is available, install a Japanese speech voice before using pronunciation activities.
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Time & language, then Speech.
- Under voice management, choose Add voices.
- Find and install a Japanese voice.
- If Japanese is not offered, go to Time & language → Language & region, add Japanese, and install its speech feature from the language options.
- Restart GlotQuest after Windows finishes installing the voice.
Voice names and Settings labels can vary slightly between Windows versions. When reporting an audio problem, include your Windows version and the Japanese voice shown in Settings.
Getting started
- Open Quests and activate at least one quest. Learn is unavailable until a quest is active.
- Choose a quest option when one is offered. The unlocked material and mastery display show your current progress.
- Open Study to preview vocabulary with image or animated cards.
- Open Learn and select a game to begin practicing active quest material.
- Use the Dictionary whenever you want to investigate a word or writing-system entry directly.
